November is a very popular month for game console anniversaries, considering that it’s the biggest month for releases due to being right at the beginning of the holiday shopping rush. The Wii U just celebrated its third anniversary, but now it’s time for its much older brother.

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System, or simply ‘SNES’ for short, was first released back in 1990 in Japan. Coming off the widely successful NES, the system went on to sell over 49 million units. The system is best known for titles like Super Mario World and the very first entry in the now infamous Mario Kart franchise.

While quite old, the console’s legacy lives on today through Nintendo’s current systems by means of the Virtual Console service.
